Historical Note

Funded in part by the Carnegie Corporation, the Conference on the Artist in Contemporary American Society took place February 14 and 15, 1947, in the Academy’s house at 28 Newbury Street, Boston, Massachusetts.  The conference was organized by three Academy fellows:  Howard Mumford Jones (1892-1980), Henry Allen Moe (1894-1975), and W.G. Constable (1887-1976).  The conference was confined to the visual arts and addressed practical problems of marketing art in modern America.  Attendance was by invitation only and panel speakers included artists, museum directors, educators, art critics, artist union representatives, retail and marketing executives, and a government official. 

Scope and Content

The collection contains guest and panel speaker invitation letters, RSVP’s and inquiries from invited guests including Academy Fellows, mailing lists, resumes, and notes from panelists and potential panelists.  Conference Program, Summary of the Report, conference planning materials, proposal and award letter from the Carnegie Corporation, handwritten conference notes from Panel Sessions, newspaper clippings, and art education bills from Minnesota and New York are also provided.

Arrangement

The series contains no subseries, all folders are roughly chronological with groupings of correspondence arranged alphabetically.
