Historical Note

This Committee on Historical Perspectives on the Scientific Study of Human Fertility was officially active from 1975-1980. It was a sub-committee of the larger Committee on the History of Recent Science and Technology through the duration of that Committee, however continued past that committee’s end. It was co-chaired by Hudson Hoagland and James Reed for its duration. Conferences were held December 9-10, 1977, and May 4-5, 1978 which first drafted and then revised participants’ papers. An eventual publication was planned, but never published.

Funding provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Scope and Content

The series is contained within the Academy Archives’ Record Group XXI-B: Academy Projects and Programs. This series contains the administrative and project records of the Committee, from 1969-1980, 1991, 1993, the majority created between 1977-1978 by the executive office of John Voss, particularly Alexandra Oleson, and held with project files. Earlier records are comprised of individual papers written before the efforts of the Committee. Later records were created for queries in reference to the project. Included are general committee and author correspondence and memoranda, conference planning files, and a small number of records referring to the proceedings, never published.

Significant materials include the papers presented at the Conferences, 1977 and 1978, drafted and revised and the transcripts of the same.

Arrangement

Processing for the series utilized MPLP principles, thus minimum preservation steps were taken, and folder titles listed in the finding aid are as they appear on the actual folders, with ascribed information in brackets. Wherever possible, original order was maintained. Records of the Committee were primarily kept within the Executive Office of John Voss. Some files were stored outside of the primary group of records; these records were incorporated with like materials.  
The series is arranged into two subseries: Subseries 1: Administrative Records; and Subseries 2: Conference Papers. Subseries 1 is arranged chronologically while Subseries 2 is arranged alphabetically by author and then chronologically.
