RG XVIII: Daedalus, "Rousseau For Our Time" (Vol. 107, no. 3, Summer 1978)
Historical Note
Daedalus is the quarterly journal of the American Academy. In 1978 the American Academy published an issue of 顿忙诲补濒耻蝉 on Edward Gibbon鈥檚 Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire to commemorate the bicentennial of that publication. The positive reception of the Daedalus issue led to the publication of a similarly themed issue two years later.
In 1778, the Genevan Enlightenment intellectual Jean-Jacques Rousseau died. Rousseau wrote on many subjects: however, some of his most frequent themes and topics examined in his writing were on anomie (the sociological term meaning the condition where society offers little moral guidance to individuals), equality, freedom, justice, marginality, and moral illness. His works on political philosophy include 鈥淒iscourse on Inequality鈥 (1755) and 鈥淭he Social Contract鈥 (1762). His part fictional book, part educational treatise named 鈥淓mile, or On Education鈥 (1762) explores the philosophy of education through a coming-of-age story. His book 鈥淛ulie, or the New Heloise鈥 (1761) was one of the first examples of romanticism in fiction. A posthumous work, 鈥淐onfessions鈥 (1782), was one of the first examples of modern autobiography.
To commemorate the bicentennial of Rousseau鈥檚 death, Daedalus dedicated the Summer 1978 issue to him. According to the preface by Academy Editor Stephen R. Graubard, 鈥淩ousseau was known as an intellectual who anticipated an agenda of moral, political, social, and aesthetic concerns that remains preoccupying for those alive today.鈥 Many of the authors represented in this issue explore Rousseau鈥檚 argumentative rhetorical style in their essays. As Rousseau鈥檚 writing was influential across multiple disciplines, authors in this issue also placed his work in the context of philosophy, anthropology, psychology, history, political science, sociology, and literature.
Scope and Content
This subseries is part of the Academy Archives鈥 Record Group XVIII: Daedalus. The records relate to the administrative and project records for the Summer 1978 issue of Daedalus, and date from 1977-1978, with the bulk created in 1978. They include invitations from Graubard to the authors of essays, copyright agreements, and general administrative correspondence.
The invitations from Graubard to the authors of essays (and in some cases following up with those individuals who did not reply to the first letter) contain RSVPs from the authors or decline notices. Records relating to copyright agreement include contracts and related reminders. The general administrative correspondence consists of flowsheets recording when documentation was received and correspondence with the printer; receipts from vendors; copied draft proofs of the preface and table of contents; memorandums; names and addresses of contributors; handwritten notes; and back matter.
It also contains records relating to the significant work of writing and editing the essays that appeared in the Summer 1978 issue of Daedalus, from 1977-1979, the bulk of it created in 1978. The author, and in some cases translator, correspondence with Graubard regards essay contributions with accompanying typewritten drafts of essays, handwritten edits with errata, corrected galleys, and copyedited versions. A few copies of the correspondence and drafts exist in certain cases.
Arrangement
Processing for this series utilized 鈥淢ore Product, Less Process鈥 (MPLP) principles: thus, minimal preservation steps were taken and folder titles listed in the finding aid are as they appeared on the original folders. Where lacking, folder titles and dates have been ascribed in brackets. Paperclips were removed; staples were not. Some folders were split into two because the amount of material exceeded the space in the folder.
This series is divided into two subseries: Subseries 1: Administrative Records, 1977-1978; and Subseries 2: Project Records, 1977-1979
The original order of the collection has largely been maintained with divisions made apparent in the order. Folders in the first subseries are arranged in their original chronological order. The second subseries is organized in their original alphabetical order.
