Gareth H. McKinley
Gareth H. McKinley, School of Engineering Professor of Teaching Innovation in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, also leads the Non-Newtonian Dynamics Group at MIT. His primary areas of interest include extensional rheology of complex fluids, non-Newtonian fluid dynamics, and microrheology & microfluidics.
Much of his work is in rheology, which is the study of how materials deform and flow, and includes understanding elasticity, viscosity, and plasticity. This branch of fluid mechanics can illuminate a range of materials, from blood to concrete. He has authored and co-authored hundreds of articles, edits a number of journals, and holds more than a dozen patents.
McKinley obtained his M.Eng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge and his Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering from MIT.
