Karen M. Fischer is the Louis and Elizabeth Scherck Distinguished Professor of Geological Sciences in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences at Brown University.

She studies the structure of Earth's interior using the waves that emanate from earthquakes. Her work focuses on understanding the properties of the lithosphere and asthenosphere, how these layers are created, deform and evolve over time, and their roles in plate tectonics, the development of mountains, and the origins of volcanism.

Fischer earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree from Yale University and her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
