Margaret (“Peggy”) Goodell is Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Director of the Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine Center, at Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, Texas. Goodell’s research is focused on the mechanisms that regulate blood-forming stem cells that reside in the bone marrow, and their dysregulation in cancer. Goodell found that stem cells can be activated by the same signals that regulate a more specific response to infection, revealing how the entire blood system can be coordinated in times of stress. These findings led to additional studies in the field, revealing how stem cells are regulated throughout life, including embryonic development and cancer. Goodell is also a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences.
