Norman Murray
Theoretical astrophysicist Norman Murray is a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Toronto and on the faculty of the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA). CITA is a nationally supported research centre at the University of Toronto devoted to studying the origin and evolution of the universe. He previously served as CITA's director for 10 years.
Murray's primary areas of interest are nonlinear dynamics, solar system dynamics, solar physics, and active galactic nuclei. He appreciates that astrophysics offers the physicist the opportunity of using techniques from every field of physics to ask questions about astronomy, such as "Why are there so many asteroids between Mars and Jupiter, and so few elsewhere?" to "How is the accreting material that is feeding the black hole distributed in space?"
Murray received his undergraduate degree from the California Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from University of California at Berkeley.
