Randolph Young Hampton
Randy Hampton is Professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at UC San Diego. Hampton鈥檚 research group investigates how cells find and break down misfolded proteins鈥攁 system known as protein quality control. These misfolded proteins can cause stress in cells and are linked to many diseases that come with aging. The Hampton lab has shown that, beyond protecting cells from stress, this same quality control system also helps regulate normal functions like cholesterol synthesis.
Hampton joined UC San Diego in 1995 after receiving his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completing a postdoctoral position at UC Berkeley. Hampton has been honored with eight teaching awards, including the Chancellor鈥檚 Associates Teaching Award and Outstanding Teacher Awards.
