Marine ecologist Robert Steneck was on the faculty of the University of Maine for more than four decades. In addition to teaching the next generations of marine scientists and working closely with local lobster and fishery communities, Steck produced numerous studies, contributed to many scientific publications, and conducted broad public outreach.

His impact on oceanography, marine biology and marine policy was felt broadly in Maine - where he worked closely with industry and community leaders - and also far beyond. Steneck's extensive ecological research includes time working in Australia, Belize, Honduras, Norway, and Polynesia.

From working with lobstermen in Maine to reef managers in Bonaire, a hallmark of Steneck's work is a combination of basic and applied research.
