Vladimir M. Shalaev, Scientific Director for Nanophotonics at Birck Nanotechnology Center and Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, specializes in nanophotonics, plasmonics, optical metamaterials and quantum photonics. His pioneering work has transformed the way researchers manipulate light at the nanoscale, leading to groundbreaking advancements in negative-index materials, transformation optics, and photonic devices. His research has paved the way for applications ranging from cloaking technology to high-speed optical communications and advanced sensing.

Shalaev's contributions to negative-refractive-index materials have been instrumental in the development of metamaterials鈥攁rtificially engineered structures that exhibit optical properties not found in nature. By controlling how light interacts with these materials, his work has led to novel technologies with implications for national security, imaging, and telecommunications.

He has received several awards for his research, including the APS Frank Isakson Prize for Optical Effects in Solids, the Optica (formerly, Optical Society of America, OSA) Max Born Award for his pioneering contributions to the field of optical metamaterials, the Willis E. Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics, IEEE Photonics Society William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award, Rolf Landauer medal of the ETOPIM (Electrical, Transport and Optical Properties of Inhomogeneous Media) International Association, the UNESCO Medal for the development of nanosciences and nanotechnologies, and the OSA and SPIE Goodman Book Writing Award. Prof. Shalaev is recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher in physics by the Web of Science Group for multiple years. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, APS, SPIE, MRS and Optica. He has also received Purdue University鈥檚 highest research honor, the Morrill Award.
