Joyce Appleby, a Fellow of the American Academy since 1993, is professor emerita of history at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is the author of numerous books, including 鈥淓conomic Thought and Ideology in Seventeenth-Century England鈥 (1978), winner of the Berkshire Prize, 鈥淐apitalism and a New Social Order鈥 (1984), 鈥淟iberalism and Republicanism in the Historical Imagination鈥 (1992), and 鈥淎 Restless Past: History and the American Public鈥 (2005).
